Serbian speakers are estimated to be around 9 million. Serbian, Bosnian and Croatian share the same past. They are identical languages, their speakers live on the area of Yugoslavia. Serbian is a Slavic language. The first written record is from the 1100s. Since then, several language reforms were done. In the 19th century, Karadžić reformed the language with the help of the Grimm brothers. Nowadays, the language is trying to return to its roots, defend the Cyrillic script from the Latin alphabet, and is trying to get rid of the English loanwords. The world’s most famous Serbian word is “vampire”. Few know this, but the first vampire legend is not about Dracula, but about Petar Blagojevic from around 1725. According to the legend, the villagers started dying from sickness after his death. The villagers thought they were dying from the bite of Blagojevic, so they opened his coffin, and saw that the body haven’t started to decompose and there was fresh blood on his mouth. The locals struck a stake through his heart and burned his body. An Austrian newspaper, the Wienerisches Diarium wrote about this case, this is the foundation of every vampire story.
