about portuguese language

It's similar to Spanish, but with a different pronunciation. It’s the 6th biggest language in the world, with 300 million speakers. It became the official language of Portugal in 1290. It has a lot of Arabic loanwords. This can be strange when learning Portugal because you’d expect words from Romance languages, but this is not the case because of the Arabic roots. Lots of Arabic words are very similar, for example the names of fruits, vegetables, items, agriculture and science. Portuguese has one of the biggest vocabularies. They usually have 3-4 synonyms for a word or expression. It has Latin, Greek, Arabic and Celtic roots. Brazil became independent in 1822. Only 5% of Portuguese speakers live in Portugal, the majority lives in Brazil. Portuguese has a gesture and a facial mimicry system as well.
