There are only 15 languages in the world with at least 50 million speakers, and Polish is one of them. Polish is a very consonant rich language. It’s interesting to note that if a name ends with –ski and –cki, it’s always written with an -i. There are maternal family names as well, they always end with an -a; a female member of the Sawicki family is called Sawicka. It’s also interesting to note that the first Bible printed in Hungarian, the Vizsolyi Bible, contained Polish letters. This was because the typographer of the Bible, Bálint Manskovit, was of Polish ancestry, he learned printing in Krakow. Polish, like most European languages, uses the Latin alphabet. There are 32 letters altogether, but 9 of these letters can’t be found in any other language. The letters Q, X and V can be found only in loanwords, commerce words and brand names. Here’s a Polish tongue-twister: “Chrząszcz brzmi w trzcinie w Szczebrzeszynie”. If you can’t say it, no worries… Even Poles are having a hard time saying it.
