According to estimations, modern Italian is a 1000 years old language. Like many Romance languages, it evolved from Latin. But the language itself wasn’t recognized until Dante. It was written in Tuscan, which was established as the standardized Italian language. Dante is often called the “Father of Italian”. But until the 19th century, there was no official Italian language. Italian is also the official language of music, since most renaissance and baroque composers were Italian. More than 85 million people speak it worldwide. Also, lots of expressions have Italian roots. For example, the unit of electrical voltage is volt, it’s because Alessandro Volta invented electricity. However, we could mention the word “fiasco”, which became known to the public after an Italian pantomime actor’s failure (his play was performed with an Italian bottle, called fiasco).
