The revival of the Hebrew language is thanks to Eliezer Ben Yehuda (1858-1922). He wanted to reform Hebrew, so that it could be used in Israel. Despite his opposition, he wrote newspaper articles in Hebrew and tried to create new words. He finished writing the article, and Jews were learning Hebrew the next day. People started using Hebrew as an everyday language because of him. The Hebrew alphabet consists of 22 letters, all of them are consonants. Hebrew is written from right to left. A popular reason behind it is that sculptors were usually right handed, so it was easier for them to hold the hammer in their stronger hand. Each letter fills a square. The “abracadabra” magical incantation likely comes from the Hebrew “I create as I speak (אברא כדברא).” expression.
