Greek voiceover

about greek language

It has 20 million speakers. It has one of the oldest written records among European languages (from 3000 years ago). It’s one of the most important languages in terms of old language reconstruction. There are no similar languages. The ancestors of the Greeks arrived to the area of modern Greece in 2000 BC. Their history is traditionally recorded from the first Olympic game (776 BC). It’s very likely that the Greeks were the first Europeans to read and write with the help of an alphabet. The alphabet word itself is from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet (alpha, beta). 12% of English vocabulary is from Greek. Most of these are mathematical, geographical, astronomical, biological, political and sports expressions. It’s also interesting to note that almost every word with a “ph” is a Greek loanword, for example: phobia, physical, photo, phrase. The word, ‘barbarian’ is also from the Greek “barbaroi” word. It means someone that does not speak Greek, so his/her speech sounds like repeating “bar-bar-bar”.
