When we say global language, most people think of English. And rightfully so. It’s spoken by more than 300 million (some say 446 million) people as a first language, and 250 million people as a second language. However, if we count in those that understand English and can speak it to some extent, that number grows to 1 billion. Just like other global languages, English started spreading during colonization. The first “exporter” of English was the British Empire, which had the biggest colonies in history. According to estimations, during the 20th century, 458 million people lived in the empire, meaning that the quarter of Earth was living in the empire.
The second biggest “exporter” of English is the US, and the American culture that conquered the whole planet. This can be observed at things like music, movies from Hollywood and the internet. This is how English became one of the most popular and widespread languages.
One reason for this is the fact is that English is one of the simplest and easiest language to learn. What’s more, it uses the Latin alphabet and there are no special characters. The grammar is quite simple, too. There’s barely any inflection and the conjugation is simple.
