about dutch language

Dutch is spoken by 23 million people as a native language and by 5 million people as a second language. It’s the official language of 6 countries (Netherlands, Belgium, Suriname, Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten). It is estimated that it was created in 450. During the 17th century, it influenced English, this is where we get the word cookie (koekje) and geek (geck). Dutch is constantly evolving and improving. They are trying to remove non-Dutch words, especially the English ones. Dutch people read a lot. The Woerdenboek de Nederlandsche Taal is the world’s biggest vocabulary, it took 134 years to make it. What’s more, counting every inflected word, there are more than 60 million words! Sometimes Dutch reporters are subtitled because of their dialects. Waffles are actually from the Netherlands as well: wafel. Long words are very common, sometimes they are 30-letters long. The pronunciation of some words are very difficult for foreigners, especially because it involves using the throat.
